200 years ago. The people revolted against their God's. 
The war waged across Scuna leaving no place untouched. The dragons only intervened to put out the final fires as the world was blanketed in a cloud of ash. 

A new form of magic was born. 
Commonly called "Magic For The People"  these devices are powered by man made means. From crude flashlights, matchlocks, cannon and the hero engine. Lighters are born.

As the cloud faded and the sun returned the people again spread out into the world. As the spells that hadn't worked since the war returned.
 

Today the world is still scared but the 4 races have banded together to reclaim the ruins of the old world. Several Universities teach the Arcane Arts and Artis Popularis.
